Matthew 5:14: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

When I was a kid, I used to read at night before going to bed. I love a good story. One night, Mom and Dad told me to shut the light out and go to sleep, but I wasn’t done with my book. So, I snuck the lamp under my covers to finish. I fell asleep with the light on and burned a hole through the blanket. I don’t remember who put out the flames, but I wasn’t hurt. Thank God! I learned my lesson but also learned the power of light.

It’s no mistake that light is the first thing God spoke into existence. Life depends on light. So, what does it mean for a follower of Jesus to be the light of the world? First, we must know something about the power behind the light. Light makes the darkness scatter. Darkness cannot overpower the light. Light also reveals things. When we can’t see well, we reach for a flashlight. Light also shows us the way. When camping, we always have plenty of lamps so that we can find our way when we need to go somewhere after dark. We also have headlights on our cars to light up the way. Finally, light keeps us from stumbling. It helps us see where we are walking and helps us avoid stubbing our toe or tumbling over furniture.

How does this apply to us? As the world’s light, we are to reflect the light of Jesus, much like the moon reflects the sun. Part of your identity is to be the light, love, and life of Jesus in this dark world. Go, be bright for Jesus!
