John 13:34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
When you decide to trust Jesus for forgiveness, choose to follow Him by obeying His teaching, and submit to Him in every area of your life, you quickly realize that your new identity in Christ comes with a responsibility to love others. As God has loved us, we must love others. We don’t die for their sins, but we die to our self-rule and selfish desires to put others first. Love is meeting the needs of others as Christ would. How has God blessed you? Perhaps He has done so in order for you to be a blessing to others. Where have you experienced freedom? Perhaps you’re free to help others find freedom and walk in it.
If Jesus summed up the entire law of the Old Testament in two commands: love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself, then love must be important (Matthew 22). If love is the first fruit of the Holy Spirit, it must be important (Galatians 5).
Today, ask the Lord to help you live out your identity as a lover, not in the sexual sense (unless you’re married!), but as a lover of life and light.
