John 17:11-“I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.”

In High School, we were required to memorize a few lines from Romeo and Juliet and the only one I remember is “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Names are important. Names help identify who you are and whose you are. There is even a good country song, “My Last Name,” that discusses this theological truth. 🙂

When you are given a new identity in Christ, you become a member of a new family with a powerful name. No eternal harm can befall a son or daughter of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This doesn’t mean you are immune from consequences here on earth, or shielded from the impact of others’ sin on your earthly life. However, you are eternally protected by the name that is above every name: Jesus Christ.

We run to Him and the power of His name in every situation. We trust in the person and name of Christ to guide us through life. We believe in His provision and protection. It may not look like what we think or want, but we know God is good and works all things together to those who love Him. As the song says, “trust and obey, for there’s no other way…”

So, what’s in a name? The name of Jesus is powerful, perfect, and must be revered.

Speaking the name of Jesus is glorious. Have a listen.
