John 17:15: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”

I know a lot of followers of Jesus who feel trapped by the wiles of the evil one. They are constantly living in fear of what Satan is going to do to them. There is a massive difference between living in fear and being aware of the devil while trusting in the power of Jesus. When Jesus prayed to the Father and asked God to keep disciples safe from the evil one, it was as good as true. Jesus also taught us to ask God to “deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13). We don’t live as if this isn’t reality. Our identity in Christ assures us of our protection. Yes, we are impacted by evil, but our eternal destiny is not affected. There have been several books I’ve read over the years that were helpful in my spiritual walk as it relates to being kept from the evil one. Jim Logan’s Reclaiming Surrendered Ground and Neil Anderson’s Victory over Darkness, Bondage Breaker, and Freedom in Christ are excellent. Don’t read them alone, though. Find a trusted friend or mentor to guide you through them. They all come back to the identity truth that when you are in Christ, He keeps you from the evil one. Live in the freedom that can only be found in Christ.
