Romans 5:2: “Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”
The “whom” in this verse is Jesus Christ, referenced in verse one. With our new identity in Christ, we have full and complete access to the grace of God. Grace has been described as “God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense.” I like that. The riches of God are so much more than material goods. God’s riches include power, peace, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, freedom, love, joy, and community. Paul says that we “now stand” in this grace. I want not just to stand but swim in it! Like Scrooge McDuck, who swims in his piles of gold, we swim in the grace and mercy of God.
What do we do with this access? I don’t know about you, but I often forget God’s grace. It’s not constantly on my mind. I wonder what life would be like if I remembered the sphere of God’s grace that I now stand. I believe I would be more grateful and more appreciative. Not just of God but others around me. I’d be more compassionate and understanding, especially toward those who are “shalom assassins” and joy killers. God’s grace extends to others, too, not just me.
What are you going to do with this access? Will you use it selfishly? Will you use it to intercede for others? Will you use this access to build up and encourage others? The opportunities are as endless as the grace and riches of God. That’s a lot. Shepherd it wisely. Shepherd it in community.
