Romans 5:10: “For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

I remember the day that my dad and I drove to the bank and opened my first savings account. He had the banker explain the importance of reconciliation. I’ll never forget the seriousness in which the guy told me, “The account has to balance!” over and over again. I kept saying “okay” without actually understanding. It wasn’t until a few months later when I bounced a check that I got another talk about reconciliation’s importance. This time, I understood. In it’s most simple form, to reconcile means to “call back into union and friendship the affections which have been alienated” (Webster’s 1828).

You see, prior to trusting in Christ, we were out of union with God, separated from Him forever. No matter what we try, we can’t be reconciled. The debt is too big. The gap is too wide. But, God had made a way back through His Son, Jesus Christ. When we trust in Him, the debt is paid, the gap is closed, and union and friendship are restored. This was accomplished when Jesus sacrificed His life on our behalf.

What a glorious truth!

But is it true? A thousand YES’s! And a thousand Amen’s!

In light of this, how are we to live? We live in the freedom in knowing that we are forever reconciled to God, we can’t bounce any checks on His account, and He is always ready to listen and enjoy our company. We are no longer strangers and aliens to our God and Father.

We are reconciled. Completely.
