Romans 6:5: “For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

Hope. It is confidence in a future event, an expectation of good. That’s a fantastic summary of this truth about our identity in Christ. When we trust in Christ’s death, we also hope in His resurrection. If both are true (and they are!), then we have hope that after our death, we are also resurrected to new life with God. What glorious truth!

United. This means that we are joined together. Some older translations use the phrase “planted together.” If we are united with Christ in death, then our corrupted and wicked self is dead too and buried in his tomb. We are utterly dead to sin and its power over us.

But wait, there’s more!

We are also united to Christ in His resurrection. He lives! We can too. When we are in Christ, we have fellowship with Him in His new life.

These dual truths give us hope.
