Romans 6:6: “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.”
We have lost the horror of the cross. We fail to understand the depth of pain and torture associated with the crucifixion. Sure, we intellectually know it was brutal, and once a decade, we rewatch The Passion of the Christ to remind us of the gruesome nature of Rome’s favorite method of execution. But on a day-to-day basis, how often do we think of the crucifixion of Christ? The Bible doesn’t spend much time mentioning the process that Christ went through on the cross, but it is referenced quite often. The cross is foundational to what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
When we trust in Jesus, we are in Christ. This means that we are “in” everything he was. This is where it can get a bit confusing since we don’t physically go through the crucifixion. Our old self was crucified with Him, and now we have a new self that is free from sin, condemnation, and toxic shame. Our sinful nature is dead. We aren’t slaves to sin. We are FREE! Today, ruminate on what it means to truly be free in Christ. Remember the pain that Jesus endured so we could be set free.
Praise the Lord, great things He has done (and is doing, and will do)!
