Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

I often talk about the biggest “BUTS” in the Bible. Today’s verse contains one of the biggest. I can’t think of a more amazing reality of a new identity in Christ than that of eternal life. Before we trust Christ, we deserve death and hell because of our sin. Sin is ugly. Sin destroys. Sin corrupts. Sin is evil. Sin is anything we say, think, feel, or do that goes against the commands or character of God. Sin ruptures relationships. Sin puts a wedge between us and God and between us and others. Sin is an inversion of the Greatest Commandments to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love others as we love ourselves. The bad news is that there is nothing we can do about our sin. However, the verse doesn’t stop halfway through. Paul continues with the GOOD NEWS. In Christ Jesus, we are given eternal life. That means that in my identity in Christ, not only am I a new creation, but my eternal destiny has changed. Not only does sin not define my life, but forgiveness and grace are mine! They can be yours too. In order for a gift to be yours, you just have to open it. This gift of eternal life with Jesus in His presence and in His power begins the moment you believe. It’s free. It’s wonderful. It’s what our hearts long for. Receive and live!
