Romans 6:22: “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.”
Everybody is a slave. We are either slaves to our sin and selfishness or slaves to God. I have seen what happens when I am a slave to my sin and it is not good. The bondage to sin is strong and I wasn’t fully aware of the danger I posed to myself and others until God opened my eyes and set me free. I was then faced with a choice. I could continue to gratify the desires of my sinful flesh or I could become a voluntary slave to God. I chose the latter because being a slave to God has real, tangible benefits whereas being a slave to my sin only ends in destruction and ruin. So, what does it mean to be a slave of God? In Scripture, being a “slave to God” means belonging entirely to Him—bound to His will, devoted to His purposes, and dependent on His provision—yet in a way that paradoxically brings true freedom. In the ancient context, being a slave/servant signified someone whose life and labor were completely owned by another. When applied to God, it paints a picture of total allegiance and joyful submission. To be a slave to God means to belong wholly to Him, to obey Him out of love, and to find in His ownership the freedom and purpose we could never have on our own. It’s the deep reality that the safest, most meaningful place to be is completely in His hands. Sounds good to me.
