Romans 6:18: “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

This verse and commentary is closely linked to Day 29 and Day 31.

There is a classic Bob Newhart skit called “Stop It” where someone is a slave to fear, and he walks her through the first steps of recovery. However, this doesn’t work with sin because we are powerless to “stop it” on our own. We need help. We need someone with more power than we have. Do you know who that is? You guessed it… JESUS! He was the original one who told Satan to “stop it” and continues to fight on our behalf. We are invited into the battle only after we have been set free from sin. We are then slaves to righteousness, HIS righteousness. There is freedom in submitting to the perfectly true, good, and beautiful God. Sin and fear are no longer our master; God is. Righteousness isn’t just something you occasionally do—it’s the rule you live under. It is joining in God’s sanctifying work. This isn’t instant perfection, but a steady reshaping of your heart, habits, and desires to match God’s character. It’s work that HE does on our behalf as we yield to the work of the Holy Spirit.

As I mentioned yesterday, we are all slaves to something. Slavery to sin leads to shame and death. Slavery to righteousness leads to holiness now and eternal life later. It seems like a no-brainer to me.

To be a slave to righteousness means to be bound—wholly and joyfully living in a way that reflects God’s holiness, allowing His truth to govern your actions, thoughts, and desires. You’re no longer free to serve sin, but free from sin, so you can fully serve what is right.
