Romans 8:2: “… because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

I don’t remember my dreams very often. In fact, it is so rare that when I do remember a dream, it is a big deal. I also don’t put much stock in dream interpretations (the ones in the Bible fascinate me). However, there is one recurring dream that I have that I believe is relatively common. I can’t see or hear anything, but I feel like I’m on a track and there is this massive ball that is rushing towards me. It is getting heavier and heavier, and right before I’m crushed, I wake up. The Psalmist describes sin as overwhelming, “like a burden too heavy to bear” (Psalm 38:4). Sin crushes people. Sin also leads to death. But just like in my dream, we can wake up with no burden. Isaiah 53:5 tells us that our Savior will be “crushed for our iniquities.” Christ is crushed on our behalf!

The law of sin and death includes this cycle: Sin-death-separation from God-more sin-repeat. Before Christ, humanity is enslaved by this cycle, unable to escape on our own. But then we trust Christ and are IN CHRIST! Now, we are under the law of the Spirit. We have a new governing principle in life. We have fellowship with God! We are no longer under condemnation (Romans 8:1), we have power over sin (Galatians 5), and we have the hope of eternal life (Romans 8:11)! That sounds like victory and true freedom. Without this freedom, people try harder, fail, and then feel guilt and shame, leading them to spiral into more sin. It’s a treadmill of condemnation and self-effort. The gospel interrupts that cycle. Thank you, Jesus!
