Romans 8:9: “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”
This truth of a Christian’s identity is simple yet complex. It’s difficult to comprehend, but the truth is incredible once grasped. This is one of the most central New Testament teachings about the Christian life. It simply means that God Himself, through His Spirit, takes up residence withing the believer at the moment of salvation. It isn’t symbolic—it’s a real, on-going presence. If you are “in Christ,” you are never without God! The indwelling Spirit gives you new spiritual life, He changes your desires so you can love God and hate sin. His presence means YOU are the temple of God. Your life is a sacred space. Holiness isn’t optional. The indwelling Spirit empowers the believer to overcome sin, produce spiritual fruit (love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control), and obey Jesus. The Christian life is Spirit-enabled! Being indwelled by the Holy Spirit also means you have the Teacher with you all the time. The Spirit guides you into all truth, reminds you of Jesus’ teachings, and convicts you of sin. You don’t have to guess your way through the Christian life, the Spirit actively forms Christ in you. The testimony of the indwelling Spirit also assures you that you belong to God. You are loved, you’ve been adopted, and you are secure in Christ. Being indwelled by the Holy Spirit means God lives in you, changes you, helps you, empowers you, speaks to your heart, produces fruit in you, assures you of your salvation and adoption, and prepares you for glory. What a wonderful truth!
