I grew up in AWANA. For those who aren’t familiar, it is a church program that emphasizes memorizing Bible verses (among a lot of other great activities). I have been amazed over the years at how I can still recall verses I memorized 20+ years ago. My sister also has a stack of notecards in her kitchen with Bible verses on it she has memorized. I haven’t gotten the courage yet to quiz her, but soon… Jesus also had memorized Scripture so when He was tempted by Satan, he could stand strong on God’s Word.
When discussing God’s commands and instructions, we are encouraged to get them into our heart. When the Bible talks about our heart, it is more than the blood pumping vessel. It is our inner part, the seat of moral character, appetites, emotions, passions, and courage. You see, we can understand what the Bible says in our minds, but not our hearts. The Word of God must penetrate our hearts! This happens as we read, study, meditate on, and memorize Scripture. Memorizing Scripture is one of the most beneficial spiritual disciplines we can practice.
Proverbs 7:3b: “Write them deep within your heart.
Is your life saturated with Scripture? How are you writing the Word of God on your heart?
