How many Facebook friends do you have? How many of those are friends? How many of your friends from high school or college do you still consider friends? My wife and I have had 17 addresses in our first 15 years of marriage. It has been hard to cultivate deep friendships. I have also had to take a look at what truly makes a friend. I had a roommate once that defined a friend as someone you can call at 3 am to help you hide a body, no questions asked. That is a bit extreme. Luckily, he never called me for that favor! Here are some qualities I look for in a friend: presence, patience, honesty, trustworthiness, integrity. Friends push us to be our best and challenge us when we aren’t. I also heard once that to get good friends, we first need to be a good friend. The number one quality I look for is grace.
Proverbs 20:6: “Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable?”
What are some other qualities you look for in a friend? Who is an old friend you need to reach out to today?
