One of the most deceptive lies that Satan thrives on in our culture is the notion that we can be good apart from God. If we reject God’s standard, then we are forced to look inward or to the world to define ethical and moral boundaries, which are relative, depending on who you are and who your culture resembles. At its core, relying on our flawed human nature is prideful arrogance that keeps us from humbly submitting to a God who created us, designed life for us, and knows better than us.
“People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.” -Proverbs 16:2 NLT
“How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” -Galatians 3:3 NLT
“Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”… Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” -Galatians 2:16, 18-20 NLT
“So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” -Romans 8:6-11NLT
