MWM: Focus Your Thinking

When I was in college, I was encouraged to practice the “Principle of Replacement.” Instead of saying I’m not going to do, say, think, act, eat, drink a certain thing, I had to say, instead of ____, I’m going to _____. I had to replace sin, bad habits, or faulty thinking with something else. Of course, the replacement item had to be holy. Today’s verse gives us a list of what we are to shift our focus towards. One writer said, “A guarded thought life has to be accompanied by a guided thought life.” What I know is that my thought life spills out into my words and deeds. When I think about nobler themes, I see rudeness and ugliness fade away. It is almost as if my parents knew what they were saying when they told me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What are you going to dwell on today? Try to focus on the finer things in life like truth, honor, beauty, and purity. Better yet, focus on the one person who perfectly demonstrated these qualities: Jesus Christ! As the hymn says, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace!”

Philippians 4:8: “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
