What is reverence? We are told that we must revere God, but do we truly understand what this entails? The dictionary defines it as “fear, mingled with respect and esteem.” I think we have wandered from a healthy fear of God. Yes, we are to love Him and view Him as our “Abba” Father. But He is more than that. He is a perfectly holy and righteous God. There needs to be an element of fear when we approach God. Almost every time we get a glimpse into heaven, or an angel of the Lord walks on the earth, we see people fall on their faces and tremble in fear. When we go before the throne of God in worship and prayer, we need to approach God with the right heart attitude. We are sinners in need of mercy and grace. We know we can approach God because of who Jesus is and what Jesus has done, but we do so in reverent awe of God. He is holy. He is worthy of all praise, honor, and respect. It’s time we return to a proper understanding of the holiness of God. He deserves it. May you be captivated by His greatness, majesty, and holiness.
