1 Samuel 2:1: “Then Hannah prayed: ‘My heart rejoices in the LORD! The LORD has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because you rescued me.’”
Hannah was a woman of prayer and great faith. She had been praying for a son, often in deep anguish and bitter crying (1 Samuel 1:10). She vowed that if the Lord blessed her with a son, she would commit that son to the Lord’s service. The prophet Eli heard this prayer and told her that God had heard it too. Her prayer was answered “in due time” (1 Samuel 1:20). Her son was born and dedicated to the Lord at a young age. This boy was Samuel and would go on to be a great leader in the nation of Israel. He would anoint Israel’s first and second king and spiritually lead the nation during the transition from prophets to kings. It all started with a poor mother’s prayer and steadfast devotion to the things of God. Hannah’s prayer is a great place to begin our month of prayer. It reminds us that the Lord hears us and longs to answer prayers in line with His will. His timing is always perfect, even if we disagree. God is our strength and rescuer in times of need and desperation. What are the “big things” you’ve been praying for? How has God rescued you? Rejoice!
