John 17:20: “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.”
Every person who has ever believed in Jesus Christ can trace their spiritual lineage to this prayer by Jesus. Jesus is preparing to go to the cross to suffer the wrath of God for our sins, yet He stops and prays for His disciples and everyone who they would influence, including you and me. It is humbling to know that Jesus was praying for me 2000 years before I would be born. This verse also points to another sobering reality: the church is just one generation away from extinction. If we stop praying for and sharing the gospel with others, the church disappears. What a responsibility! I firmly believe the local church is the hope of the world as we courageously and boldly proclaim the life-saving truth that Jesus is the only way of salvation from sin and darkness.
Father God, thank you for the prayers of Jesus for my family and me. Help me to prioritize prayer and evangelism in my own life. May the next generation know You and Your Word, grow in faith, love, and grace, and go to their neighbors and the world with the truth of Jesus Christ. Amen.
