I don’t know about you, but prayer is a difficult discipline to develop. When I get busy, prayer is the first thing that goes away in my daily routine. I firmly believe in the power of prayer and have seen prayer change lives, companies, and ministries. But for some reason, I shelve it when my calendar fills up. Lord, please forgive me! Paul tells us to be devoted to it, so we must persevere in prayer, even when we don’t feel like it. We must also have an alert mind. Our minds shouldn’t be distracted or distorted. We get distracted by the mundane of life. But we are also distracted by worry. Our minds are distorted when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, making prayer harder or near impossible. Our minds can also be distorted by the trappings of materialism, making our prayer life a reading of our wish list to Santa Claus. We must also posture our hearts with thanksgiving.
Father God, help me be more devoted to conversing with You. Give me the desire each morning and throughout the day to talk and listen to You. Show me ways my mind is distorted or distracted so that I can approach you with an alert mind. Remind me of Your goodness and faithfulness so I can be ever thankful. Amen.
Colossians 4:2: “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”
