Are you a lifelong learner? What do you do to keep your mind active? A few years ago, I was doing some counseling, and the guy mentioned he hadn’t read a book since high school. I thought this was strange because I’m an avid reader. It’s not weird. According to Hogwarts Professor (yes, it’s a real thing-link below), 33% of high school graduates never read another book, and 42% of college grads never read another book after college. It gets worse. 70% of US adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years. WHAT?!? I know there are more ways to learn than simply reading, but reading is so crucial to your emotional, spiritual, and mental health, we must do better as a country. When I asked that guy why he hasn’t read since high school, he said he didn’t have time. In reality, he didn’t make time. We make time for what we think is important. It also takes discipline to learn and grow. It is easy to stay stagnant. I think there’s a law of thermodynamics that relates to this… One of the greatest joys I get from reading is when a thought pattern or belief is called into question, and I learn something new. I’m not talking about a significant doctrinal belief or core truth, those stand the test of time, but some nuance to faith or practice that I learn from the Bible or good book. Besides reading a good book, what are some other disciplines that help you grow and mature?
Proverbs 12:1: “To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction.”
