De-escalate

In one of my previous jobs, I went through some training on de-escalating situations that had gotten out of control. The first rule they gave us was to remain calm. You can’t bring a situation down if you continue to go up! We’ve all seen those arguments, or maybe even been in them, where one person is trying to shout over another until the volume gets unbearable. I’ve also seen the opposite where one party was yelling, but the other was just quiet until the emotions lowered and they could have a reasonable conversation. Nobody ever wins in an argument anyway. Relationships are stressed, friendships are lost, and marriages don’t progress as long as there is competition and rage. Be kind. Be gentle. Be humble.

Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”
