I am a bit obsessive about planning. I like to plan my day down to the minute, and I have a color-coded checklist in my planner. I have a five and ten-year plan for my personal life and the church I pastor. I’m not talking about just dreams, but actual plans—on paper. Over the past several years, I’ve noticed that I have to hold “my plans” with an open hand, especially if I can see my preferences showing up in plans that involve other people. Losing control of my best-laid plans is a lesson I’m continually learning. If I’m honest with myself, I’ve never really had control anyway. I firmly believe in a Sovereign God that accomplishes His plans and purposes, often in spite of my plans. I am grateful that God is in charge and am humbled when He graciously reminds me of this. Almost every pain point in Lyndsey and I’s life has come about when we’ve gotten ahead or behind God’s plan. So, how can we stay in step with God? Listen to God in His Word, the life of Christ, and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Easier said than done, but much more fulfilling when God is directing our steps. Following God’s lead is also more peaceful and joyful. What plans of yours do you need to set aside and wait upon God for direction?
Proverbs 16:9: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
