Romans 5:1: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

When we trust Jesus and receive our new position of “in Christ,” we can stop trying to justify ourselves. When I was a kid and I would get in trouble (I know you are all shocked that I would ever do anything to get in trouble), I would either try to say “It wasn’t me” or “Here’s why I did it.” It is in our nature to try to justify our actions. When it comes to our right standing before God, “It wasn’t me” and “Here’s why I did it” don’t work, at all. We are guilty. We are sinners. We deserve the punishment. We deserve death and hell. BUT, because of our new identity, we are justified, not by what we did/do, but by what Christ did. He lived the perfect life, died the death we deserve, and was raised from the dead so that you and I can be treated “Just As If I’d Never Sinned.” What a beautiful #IdentityTruth!

This doesn’t give us license to sin, but leads us to glorify and worship Jesus for the reality of being declared righteous by the actions of someone else. We can declare that “It was me” and “I have no excuse” but I am loved by God and forgiven through Jesus Christ.

I am declared “not guilty” because of Jesus. Yes and Amen!
