Romans 6:18: “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
One of my favorite scenes in The Shawshank Redemption is the escape. Andy has to crawl half a mile through the sewers of the prison to freedom. When he gets to the river, he strips down and lets the rain wash off all of the stink and gross stuff. The look on his face is pure joy. While you can’t draw a direct parallel to the gospel because Andy does the work in the movie, whereas Jesus does all of the work in our freedom, the feeling of joy is the same. Actually, the joy we should have from the freedom Jesus provides is greater than any other joy we can experience. We are set free from sin because of Jesus. When we are in Christ, we are entirely free from the power of sin in our lives! Amen and Amen. I wonder if Paul had Jesus’ words in mind when he wrote about freedom in Romans? Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed!” (John 8:36). This freedom means that any claim on our lives that Satan may make, any power over our thoughts and actions that Satan may try to exert, was utterly shattered by Jesus on the cross. 100% freedom. Guaranteed! We have been set free from the power of sin so that we may become slaves to the righteousness of Christ. It sounds strange to say that perfect freedom is found in slavery, but until you experience it, you just can’t get it. Sometimes, faith doesn’t make sense. How can the power of sin be broken in our lives? JESUS!
