Bitterness is a thief of joy and consumes every part of a persons life, becoming a stronghold and sometimes even an idol. It corrupts us and takes our focus off of God. It puts focus onto ourselves as the victim, and it shuts down our empathy and understanding. People can often become immobilized due to the numbness they experience from bitterness, which is right where Satan wants you to be: a self loathing, graceless, uncompassionate, apathetic person.
